Truly, Only God Knows!

We made it! Mayans, eat your heart out! Now we joke about it being in faith that it was not real. But God does provide us His revelation of what is to come. In Revelation, John writes about God's judgement. We might not heed this because it is written so long ago, to an audience that has long passed. But is it completed? Has Christ come the 2nd time? If not, then it is still applicable! We need to hear the prophecy and be ready! Not by making preparations for armeggedon with food, shelter, weapons, etc. Rather preparations in our heart. Is our heart ready? Are we prepared spiritually? How do we "get ready"? If the Mayans were right, would you have been ok? Jesus lets us know He is coming again. The date and time are unknown. That is why we need to be prepared now!

License to sin?

If you are reading this, the world did not end. Perhaps scripture is correct, the day and hour are unknown. We humans try to "figure" things out, but it is not within our understanding. God allows us to know certain attributes about Him. One aspect that the writer Jude picked up on was consistency. God directs His people to live in a way that is pleasing to Him. Yet some think that God's grace is a "get out of jail free" card. He allows us to choose our actions. But friends, He will hold us accountable for our actions. Paul writes on this in Romans 6:1. God's grace and forgiveness covers our sins. We should not try to get more of that by sinning more! Jude instructs us to do two things, keep from sin and rescue others stumbling towards it. REM said it best, "I feel fine"!

Opening the door for others

We are rushing to the end of the Bible and the books are beginning to jumble. Only Jude and Revelation to go! Thank you for engaging in this quest with me. Even if you don't read this daily, it keeps me accountable and reading the Word. That said, 1,2,&3 John are short letters written to unnamed believers to encourage and strengthen. The church was under much persecution at the time, and believers would be violently killed for merely passing letters! Remember that when someone wishes you "Happy Holidays". Christmas might be under attack, but it has been so for 2,000 yrs. John encourages his reader to be careful, yet show hospitality. Be careful of false teachers! All applicable to us today! Remember, hospitality begins with a smile and warm greeting. So Happy Holidays!

For Our Growth

1Peter talks about having faith and perseverance in suffering. When this was written, Christians were considered the enemy of the Roman empire. Not because they were evil or had done wrong, rather they were the scapegoats. Peter writes to believers to encourage them in the face of this persecution. It can be noted that one can either grow or grumble in this persecution. Growth happens when you work against the resistance. Like physical exercise, it makes you stronger. Keep in mind the victory we have in Christ. It might not be immediate in the trials you face, but it is eternal. Liken it to saving. Why do that, after all it merely deprives from the now. But in the long run, it is a blessing. Faith will carry you through. Decide to grow!

Change you can see

Faith without works is dead, so says James. In his letter, James lays out the argument that in growing in christian maturity, there will be fruit. Our actions will be more like Christ and less like our own selfish desires. It might be hard for us to see the change in ourselves. We still have wants and desires. Some might be contrary to scripture. It is a process. If we were to change completely overnight, it might not stick. That could be faith based solely on emotion , which can and will change. Like a good diet or exercise, this has to become a natural part of living. Accountability is important to keep you on the right track. Fellowship is equally important. We need to rejoice with one another and find strength from one another. Through it all, make sure to count the change!

Guide to Spiritual Maturity

We are approaching the end of this trek. We close Hebrews with a powerful reminder of what spiritual maturity looks like. Showing hospitality and love for others is not something we do for what we get out of it. We are honoring God by loving His creation, showing respect for what He has made. Being content in every circumstance is key to the growing process. Additional "things" do not satisfy, yet we pursue these with reckless abandon. Don't believe me, go to Walmart and count the purchases made on a cc. Count your purchases on cc. Buying things we don't need, with money we don't have. Be content with what you have. Possessions are not evil, but the pursuit of them in place of God is. Hebrews gives a glimpse of spiritual growth and how it is done. Great guide to follow.

Faith is Being Certain, even when blind

Ch11 in Hebrews can be referred to as the "Believer's Hall of Fame". There are multiple examples of men of faith. Men who believed in God and His promises, and did things out of their comfort zone. Ch11v1 is a real keeper for me, "Faith is being sure of what we hoped for and certain of what we do not see". Are we certain? Are we sure? Or do we doubt. Honestly, I struggle with doubt at times. There is much that I do not understand. Looking back at the men in ch11, I see that I am not alone. Many doubt. But, keep focus. Don't allow doubt to lead into despair or rejection of faith. God's ways are not man's ways. The story is not over yet! Ch12v1-2 talk about endurance, keeping eyes on Jesus. It is not easy, but the reward is beyond imagination!

What's in a sacrifice?

Sacrifice, why is it necessary? What makes a good sacrifice? The writer of Hebrews ch10 tackles these questions by pointing to how animal sacrifice is insufficient. Although it is the law, it has to be repeated. Jesus, as the true high priest, sacrificed better. He gave himself. His human-ness and sinlessness made this possible. He bore what we nor animals could. Ch10v19 states that when sins are forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices. Yet, how many of us pick back up our problem and try to solve it, even after we have laid it at the foot of the cross? We are stealing because it is not ours anymore! Once laid at the cross, it is not ours! We have the perfect solution to our problem of separation from God. Accept it!

Direct Access!

Access to God, amazing thought isn't it? For centuries, people worshipped only statues of their gods, even the Israelites could only enter into Yaweh's prescense one time each year. But Jesus has changed that. Through his work of reconciliation, we have direct access to the creator. Now, the question is do we use it? Not as a spiritual Santa Claus to fix aunt Tizzy's hip. But in true worship,, we can bring our heart's desires, worries, problems and love to God directly. And when we do, we need the confidence that it will happen! Might not be exactly our way,, God's ways are not man's ways. An example of this...2 men pray for rain, 1 carried an umbrella. Do you have your "umbrella" handy, or are you just going through the motions....

Regarding Jesus

Regarding Jesus, how do we relate? How can we relate? He is God. He is higher than angels! But, inorder to be the perfect substitute, he became human. Note that He was in existence before being born as a human. But became human nonetheless. The writer of Hebrews captures these important facts in chs. 1&2. This writer (unknown) writes to Jewish audience of Christian believers who have been exiled from the temple, and are now being persecuted by the gentiles. Where can they turn? This writer starts with the building block, Jesus himself. Why is He different, why should He be enough? We know scripture shows angels as mighty warriors in God's service. But they were created, and although lower than God, they were higher than man. Check out ch2v14. Jesus is the answer!

Paying What We Owe

What do we owe? Do we have obligations, or has God forgiven us our past? Not quite. While He has provided for our salvation, we need to make restitution for our past promises and debts. Paul writes this very thing in his letter to Philemon. It is a short letter to an owner of a runaway slave. The slave, Onesimus, has accepted Christ. Now Paul emplores Philemon to take Onesimus back, and charge whatever debt he owes to him. A point to take is that even though Onesimus is a new creation in Christ, he still has obligations he must fulfill. So do we. Making amends is crucial to our growth. Don't neglect the past, learn from it and clean up what you can. It will provide a great witness to the fruit of your salvation!

Going where needed

How many of you would like to set up a ministry in Anacostia, Harlem, or even Jonathan St in Hagerstown? These are notoriously rough areas. We might shy away from such a task. Yet Paul sent Titus directly to the island of Crete to minister. Crete was not a nice place, to say the least. We get our derrogatory example "acting like a cretan" from the reputation of this place. Paul instructs Titus on Christian doctrine and emphasizes Holy living. He shows that we are not just called to work in comfortable places. There is great need everywhere. The Holy Spirit will lead us. Don't be afraid to make contact. I noticed how usual barriers melt when I did some work at MCIH (prison). The inmates did not see me as some holier than thou white guy. I became a friend. Takes time, but worth it!

Be Ye Ready

Are you ready? What for you ask? Preaching the Word of course. Do you need to prepare and perhaps write out long sermons or testimonies. Those are not bad, but not necessary. Paul writes in 2 Tim to be ready, preach the Word. Paul is writing his last letter to Timothy to encourage him to keep preaching and teaching,, even amid the turmoil and suffering. Be ready whenever the occasion might arise. It is God who has equipped us, so do not lean on your own understanding. In ch1v7 Paul notes God has given us power, so we need not be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. God has entrusted us with truth, but it is not ours to keep. Nothing is of value until it is given away! There is much blessing in giving! Ch3v16-17 is a keeper...memorize it and apply it! You must feed on the Word, do not be intimidated or oerwhelmed. God gave it to us to use! It is relevant and applies to us even 2000 years later! Preach the gospel, when necessary, use words....St. Francis.

Are you rich!

Did you play Powerball lately? What were you hoping for, instant wealth? Paul providess great insight to wealth in 1 Tim6:6. He notes how we came into the world with nothing, and we will leave in similar fashion. It is the love of money that is at the root of all kinds of evil. Remember, you cannot buy peace...you will always long for more. So during this time of Christmas, it is difficult not to get caught up in materialism. We want nice things, but didn't we get those last year? Are they still nice? Do we cherish them with the fever we had when we received them? Or are they old and in need of repair or replacement? Or are they not shiny anymore. Such is the way of things! Growing in wealth of friends and family will last much longer and provide better return and satisfaction

Where to put this sin

In catching up, today's thoughts are from Colossians, and 1&2 Thess. Paul writes to warn the believers in these cities not to become complacent, or follow empty rituals. Christ gives complete salvation and He is sufficient for every need. Col1:14, God has purchased our freedom with blood and has forgiven all our sins. So let go of them confess, set them at the foot of the cross, and walk away. They are not yours anymore! So when we go back to pick them up and redo them or languish about having done them the first time, we are stealing! Another thought...our purpose is to please God, not people. He is the one who examines the motives of our hearts. Ask yourself, "do you believe Jesus is coming again? Do you behave like He is"? God calls us to holy living. Sin weighs us down. Put it at the foot of the cross, and be thankful that God will take it, without hesitation!

Christmas Time.....again

So Christmas season in upon us. The music, shopping decorations, rushing to and fro. How can we avoid getting rolled over by the activity? Remembering the "reason for season"? Perhaps....but I think it is more that just remembering. We are CELEBRATING!!! The joy of the birth of the king is our to share! That is point we miss. The music and fuss might be annoying, if we allow it. Don't let it sap your joy. If you need help with the joy aspect,, read Phillipians. Paul writes this with a barrel full of joy. Keep in mind that he writes this from Prison! We enjoy Christmas in our nice warm houses and we still allow the irrelevant things of life sap us. 2 verses to consider, Phil4:6-7..you and God cannot worry about the same problem at the same time. Also, ch4v13, I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. So take that Christmas lights!

Of wealth and riches

: How many of us are rich? There is a storm brewing in our country today of taxing the rich, being against them. What they have is not fair, and they didn't build that....so society is saying. But what riches are they talking about? Paul writes of better riches in Galatians and Ephesians. Those riches are pure and everlasting. Not like the paper & coin that gets ruined. We don't realize the wealth we possess. As we grow in Christ, we utilize that wealth more. We lean on God in times of trouble. Why not celebrate with Him in times of success? The thing about our wealth in Christ is that it is not ours to hoard. We don't realize the worth of it until we are giving it away. A man with $1 million is not rich until he begins to use the $. Our wealth is likewise. Beauty is we get more!

Rejoice! Rejoice!

Paul ends his 2nd letter to the Corinthians with the word Rejoice! Encourage one another, greet each otherr in Christian love. Easy right? We do this all the time! Not even close! Now, this Christmas season is an excellent opportunity for us to do just that in the main stream! With Christmas music blasting at every store and decorations abounding, we have the oppty to really shine for Jesus. You might not like the songs or the unnecessary hype, or the materialistic spectacle that Christmas has become, but it is our time! Do we rejoice upon seeing one another? I've been to 2 funerals in the past week, people were sad and missed the departed. Then turned and gossiped, bickered and put one another down. Bro love or bro shove? It is time to rejoice! Don't let this pass!

Give Thanks

Thanksgiving over? Not so says Paul in 2 Cor 6-9. In ch8v9 talks about Jesus being rich, became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich. Do you feel rich? Being a partner in the gospel is to allow the gospel to have a life changing effect on you. Once we truly accept him, our lives are changed. This might not be a thunderbolt moment, but if the change is true, the fruit will show. Ch9v15....thank God for his Son-a gift too wonderful for words!

Troubles or opportunities?

The troubles we see will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever! Paul writes this in 2 Cor 4:18. It is true today as well. What troubles got better through worry? What have we solved by fretting? Do the troubles of today seem like impassible mountains? What about the mountains of yesterday? Not as big now? Do we look for the joys, or merely focus on the troubles. Good questions we must meditate through. The news cycles nowadays does not help, only focusing on the negative. Gossip doesn't help either. We are constantly trying to build ourselves up at other's expense. As I pause for thanksgiving thought, I need to remind myself that God is higher than any mountain. And that by faith, those mts can be moved. I need to adjust my focus...there is joy to be had!

Welcome to the table

In many ways, Paul letters to the church in Corinth are like "how-to" manuals. In 1 Cor 11:23-33 Paul discusses communion,, eating the Lord's supper. Note his special instruction in vv27-29. We need to be right with God before we partake. What does "right with God" mean? To be without sin? Impossible. To be "really religious", not so. To be putting others esp Jesus higher than self....YES! Being right with God means not giving into temptations of the flesh, or desires of self. Rather, focused and worshipping Jesus for His sacrifice and work done on the cross. The elements of bread and wine(juice) are symbolic. We do in rememberance. It is not meant as a meal. We are all unworthy to participate. But Jesus himself has invited us! It is the most filling element you can eat!

God provides...temptation watch out!

Moving along in 1 Cor, we see Paul giving instructions on a wide range of topics...marriage, relations, diet, payment to pastors, etc... He issues both approvals and warnings. One warning is esp important to me. In 1 Cor 10:12-13, he warns about being too confident or too cockey! He notes that the very temptation we think we are so powerful at avoiding, can consume us. And, he continues that these temptations are common to man! But, he declares that God will provide a way out. Amazing how God has our back! He knows what we can bear and when we need help. So, if you think the pressure is too much, look to God, He has already provided a way out. We might see it right away, and it might not be what we expect, but it is what we need!

Getting right with God

Getting right with God, how can we do that? We can't! Paul writes about this in Ro 9-11. It is by God's doing. We don't understand God's way, rather we try to do it our way. We keep the law (as much as we can), do what we think if right and fair, and basically "act" religious. However, we are the mere clay, God is the potter. It is not ours to argue. But God loves and provides His grace and mercy. Ch10 discusses this grace through salvation. If you need a tool to witness, this is it! In v9-13, Paul explains confessing and belief. There is a key point in v14...how can one call on Him unless they believe in Him. And to believe, shouldn't you want to know the object of that belief? Get to know God. He desires a relationship with us! The potter wants to know His clay!

Who is Your Boss?

In Romans ch 6-8, Paul makes the case of changing one's nature and no longer being a slave to sin. Ch6v14 , Sin is no longer your master! It is like going into a former employer's business and allowing them to order you around. Us prideful Americans would never go for that! We should not mock sin, nor should we continue to test the limits of sin. We are a new creation in the Spirit. The Law makes us aware of sin. We cannot keep the law, we will always fail. But God in His grace, provided us a way. See ch8v3. Christ is that way. He is our new boss. We need His guidance. Allow yourself to be controlled by the Spirit. To do this, you must connect. Prayer, meditation, reading the Word. How can you be in a relationship without putting forth any effort ? Seek Him. Ch8v31 God is for us!

Amazing Love

As we hit Romans 4-5, we see Paul digging into some deep theology, justification. By doing certain things, we deserve, we are justified in our actions right? Not so fast. The Law God has provided only shows us that we are unable to earn salvation. We fall short of God's perfect standard. Is all hope lost then? Certainly not! Paul declares God's love for us by explaining Jesus' sacrifice. In Ro 5:8, he notes that while we were sinners, He sent His son to die for us! I don't know about you, but I do not give even simple gifts to those I do not like or get along with. Actually, my selfish nature can keep me from giving to those I do like. But what God did is amazing. He provided the solution, even when that is rejected. Amazing love doesn't begin to describe!

Romans 1-3, The Set-Up

As I begin reading Romans ch1-3, I wonder why I don't feed on this book more. The depth and clarity of Romans is truly astounding. Paul lays out truth after truth, really coming to the point of the matter. Ro 3:23, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. ALL have sinned! Paul condemns us who know the law as well as those who do not. Ch1v20 talks about general revelation. We should know about God by simply looking at His creation! These first three chpts are the setup. Paul is describing the problem, and that we humans cannot fix the problem-separation from God. All the door holding and helping old ladies across streets will not punch our ticket back to relationship with God. So what does? That is why Paul didn't end Romans at ch3....read on!

Frustrated Witness?

When we hear the truth, do we readily accept it? Paul is on trial before King Agrippa in Acts ch26. He details his own conversion a nd mission in Jesus. Agrippa, who is noted as knowledgable in Jewish teachings, replies"Do you think you can make me a Christian so quickly"? Paul is a super witness, having met with Jesus first hand. He also met and lived with the disciples of Jesus, who witnessed his earthly life first hand. If Paul were to have difficulties in his witnessing to others, should we not expect difficulties? Does the fear of rejection or having questions we are unable to answer hinder or stop us from a witness opportunity? Did it stop Paul?

Statues to Unknown Gods?

In Acts ch 17, Paul addresses a council of philosophers about their statue to an unknown God. In v24, Paul describes the True God of the universe, creator of Heaven and earth. One God. That is where our hope is placed. He gives life and breath and satisfies every need. He is greater than mere happenings here on earth. For me, this is important. I do not pretend to know or understand all of God's ways. He causes things to happen that seem bad at the time, but there comes good from it. So, things in life will disappoint and go a way you think is bad. But as Paul reminds us, God is in control and is working out His plan through our lives. He is greater than any one!

Our Actions Vs. God's Grace

Peter gets it! In Acts ch15v7-11, Peter makes a very good point as leaders are arguing whether new converts should be baptized and circumcized, and follow the law of Moses. Peter notes that they should not burden the Gentiles with a yoke that the Jews were unable to bear. It shows the purpose of the law! It was not meant that man should follow every letter, he cannot. It was to guide the Jews and help them understand sin exists. It was a way to demonstrate how far they were from God's perfect standards. The Christian faith is not based on our actions and rituals, rather it is solely God's grace. We forget that and go about the business judging others by how "religious" they are. Peter stifled the discussion 2,000 yrs ago, we need to stifle it today! Not by our actions!

Can't Stop God!

Acts ch5-7 discusses issues within the early church, from deciet with Ananias and Sapphira with holding money and lying about it, to having too much work and not enough workers. Ch5 also discusses the conversation of the Sanhedrin who were trying to decide what to do with the apostles' teaching on Jesus. Gamaliel, a wise member, rose up and declared that if this teaching was from man, it will eventually die out and fail. If it was from God, you will not be able to stop it. Here we are 2,000 years later....can't stop God! Ch7 has Stephen, a helper of the apostles, being tried by the Sanhedrin and providing an eloquent and quick history of the Jews. He concludes noting they have killed their prophets. Guilty! And they kill him too! The first martyr...

The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit

Something happened in Acts ch1-4 that caused these uncertain and fearful men to stand up boldly for the Gospel. The Holy Spirit gave them power, wisdom and courage. Peter, the one who denied Christ 3 times suddenly was preaching with authority in the temple courts! This radical change is proof enough for me that they witnessed what they said! Their character changed! No longer hiding in the shadows so they would not get caught, they proclaimed boldly. When the Holy Spirit dwells in us, we are filled with such courage as well. The transformation creates the desire in us to share with others! Unfortunately, others often do not share the passion back and we become either discouraged or lukewarm. The enemy is cunning and patient. Don't allow your fire to go out. There is work to do!

Jesus gets close

John ch13-17 has Jesus sharing a very intimate moment with his disciples. He speaks plainly and openly with them, equating them as friends. He washes their feet. He prays with and for them. He tells them of his leaving and why it is important. He goes to prepare a place for them. He comforts them with the knowledge that the Holy Spirit will come to guide them. He even prays for us today, who believe what the apostles taught and wrote. In john ch17v20 Jesus notes this because of the disciples' testimony. He chose even us. We need to keep the chain of testimony going...through our words, teachings and actions. We are to become one. We need to love one another. Thinking of others first, as Jesus did.

Get Busy!

: Hopefully all is well from the storm. Jesus creates quite a storm in John ch9. He heals a blind man on the Sabbath. The religious leaders are furious! They question the blind man, and his parents! When the religious leaders question him again, he asks,"do you want to be his disciples too?" Out of the mouths of the innocent. We do try to complicate things in life, trying to "figure them out". We fail to see the simple purity of Christ's message and purpose! He saved us! Jesus makes this point in ch9v41, check it out! Remember, you have been blessed with the truth not to keep it to yourself, rather it is to be used to teach and lead others! Get busy"

Is it love that drives us?

John 6-8. Jesus' ministry is expanding. He preaches in Samaria, Galilee and Jerusalem. Many disciples, though, find his teachings too rigid and fall away. John ch6v26-27 ask a very pointed question we need to answer today as well. Do we desire Jesus beccause of something we get or have received? Crowds followed because he fed them. Is love, true love born out of what you get? Or is it born of a desire to know another and be with them? Why do we follow? Is it merely for the promise of eternal life? How wonderful might that life be if it is something we do not want? True desire for another....that is what should drive us in our relationship with Him.

Friday, October 26, 2012

He is God!

Welcome to John. Ch1 begins with the declaration of utmost importance. In the beginning (sound familiar?), the Word already existed. He was with God, and he WAS God. John doesn't mince words. He goes straight to the point. How could we accept people saying that Jesus was merely a good teacher or nice guy. Either John is lying, or Jesus IS God. So, armed with this revelation of who Jesus is, what do we do with it? Do we worship? Follow His example? Revere His name? Or are we hesitant to say it outloud in public? Do we shun from proclaiming ourselves "Christian". I know I have in the past. But no more,, Jesus is too important to me to ignore or sidestep. He is God!

Are you being served?

We finish Luke ch22-24 with the familiar story of betrayal, crux, and resurrection. Before this happens in ch22, Jesus is talking with His disciples at the last supper. He pointedly discuss what it means to serve, rather than being served. He demonstrates this by washing the disciples feet. Amazing humility! His point is more than just doing acts of kindness, it is one of attitude. He is demonstrating how to put others first. He is giving us that example to follow. So, how are we putting others first? How do we love others through our attitudes? Acts of kindness are important, but we cannot do them and keep score. True service to others begins with a loving attitude and desire to put others first, regardless of what we "get" in return!

Monday, October 22, 2012

What are you seeking?

We are still in Luke (ch16-18). Some very interesting parables by Jesus in these chpts. Ch16v10-13 talks about being faithful in small matters before large ones. As we grow and mature, we are able to take on bigger roles. God enables to learn responsibility. He is preparing us for something even greater than we can imagine. So the little scraps we chase after here on Earth, will one day be seen for what they are. You cannot serve 2 masters, God and money. Money will never fulfill and will never be enough! God will provide what you need! Ch17v33 is a key one to remember...whoever clings to this life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will save it. What are you living for? The next dollar, or for God?

Life's Instruction Manual

Today, in Luke 3-6, we read of Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness. Jesus responds to this temptation by quoting scripture, truly a lost art in this day and age. Satan cannot stand against the Word of God. He even tries to use scripture in ch4v10-11 in tempting Jesus. But he has wielded it incorrectly and Jesus refutes him in ch4v12. What do we do today when attacked? I do not quote scripture or even think about it at first. Thankfully I am still growing. God has given us His Word not for a history lesson or fun reading (it can be both), rather it is a manual for life. I know most of us don't like to read manuals, but this one is crucial. Familiarize yourself with the instructions. Lean on them in troubling times. After all, Jesus did!

Time to rejoice!

Today, we begin reading in Luke (ch1-3). It should be a familiar narrative of the conception and birth of John the Baptist and Jesus. John was the prophecized forerunner to Jesus, m.aking the way for the Lord. See ch1v76-79. In ch2, the focus is on Jesus' birth. V25 talks about a man named Simeon, who was filled with the HS, waiting for the Lord. Note his words in v34. The child will be rejected by many and it will be their undoing. But he will be the greatest joy to others. Which side do we really fall on? If Christ is our greatest joy, how often do we tell others? When our team wins in sports, we boast and brag and celebrate. Christ is greater than that, yet we keep it to ourselves. We should be joyful in all we do! That includes the RGIII run! Tell others who Christ is!

Denial and Amazing Love

We finish Mark today chs14-16 with the arrest and cruxifiction of Jesus. The story is the familiar Easter story told in more detail in Luke and John. Mark also tells of Peter's denial in ch 14. In 14:29, Peter swears that "even if everyone else deserts you, I never will". A few hours later, Peter does just that in vv66-72. We can feel sorry for Peter, or we can realize just how often we too deny Jesus. It might not be by our words, but can be by our actions. Do we judge others? Do we seek our comfort and security above others? Guilty as charged! Thankfully, those are some of the very reasons Jesus endured the crux and died for us! Amazing love is all we can say!

Faith and what comes from within

Continuing through Mark (chs4-7), we read of many miracles and teachings of Jesus. He heals many and overrides the power of nature! Two key points to me in these chpts are when Jesus commands the disciples to go across the Sea of Galilee in ch 4. Note he does not command them to get halfway across and drown. Even when a terrible storm comes up, He is not shaken. The disciples are afraid and think they will die. Jesus rebukes the storm and the unbelief of the disciples. Are we different today? Storms happen in our lives and we fear failure rather than believing that Jesus will see us through. The other key is ch7. Jesus talks about food not defiling, rather what you say and do defiles! It is the things from within that make you unacceptable to God. Guard yourself!

Doctor, Doctor!!!

Today we begin the study in the book of Mark. Mark was a disciple of Peter and wrote more to a Roman audience. He focused on miracles and teachings of Jesus rather than giving a history of His life. His purpose is to set forth the credentials of Jesus as the "Son of God". Mark's writing in ch2 focus on the Pharisees and their attempts to trap Jesus. They note how it is wrong to work on the Sabbath. They even criticize for the company Jesus keeps. Jesus responds in ch2v17, "Healthy people do not need a doctor". Do we look down our noses at people? Of course. We might not mean to, but we do. We fail to see others as Jesus did, as created in the image of God. Next time we go to judge a person, look into their eyes and remember they are made in God's image!

Poor Peter, poor us

As we close Matt (chs 26-28), we read the last supper, crucifiction and resurection. Familiar stories we hear each Easter. Matthew's writing quickly goes through these events, whereas Luke and John's Gospels have more focus. In Matt ch 26v69-75, we read of Peter's denial. Just a week had passed since Peter experienced the triumphant entry into Jerusalem. All that week, many miracles and magnificent teachings. Jesus even taught that His time was drawing near. But Peter tried to impact events his way (see ch26v31-35). We often try to do the same. Focus on not just the denial, but Peter's attempt to control events. He was so sure of his loyalty and commitment. We might be similar. Are we really tried in our faith? Even the small amout of pressure can cause us to bend. Poor Peter, poor us.

Time and Gifts

In Matt ch 24-25, the topic becomes end times prophecy. Jesus teaches about things to come and being prepared. He warns about becoming sidetracked (24:4), warns against being a date setter (24:36), and advises to be a good steward of your time and opportunities (24:45-46). The point of these warnings and advice is not to worry believers, but rather to assure them that these events must happen in accordance with God's plan. We should not focus on times and events yet to come. Rather focus on what God has blessed you with now. God has given us quite a bit, similar to the servant with 5 bags in Matt ch 25. We should not be like the servant with 1 bag, afraid to do anything. That is not why God gave us the one bag!

Who do you say I am?

, today's reading in Matthew is filled with great teachings. We can read of how Jesus teaches about children (ch18v714), forgiveness (ch18v23-35), and salvation (ch19v16-26). Each is a major study unto itself. I want to focus on what is perhaps the pivotal teaching in the gospels, ch16v15. Jesus asks his disciples "who do YOU say I am". He asks that question of us DAILY! As CS Lewis stated in Mere Christianity, we can dismiss him as a liar or lunatic, or worship him as Lord. He has left no other options. If/when we choose to worship as Lord, our lives will change. Our perspective on others will deepen in love, and we will lose sight of selfish goals. Jesus notes in ch16v24, "if you want to follow, you must take up your cross". Are you ready and willing? Who is Jesus to you?

When the storms come....

In Matt ch12-15, there are many parables and examples of Jesus' teachings. I want to focus on one today-ch14vv25-36. Jesus' disciples had put out on the Sea of Galilee without him. A storm came up and they were being tossed about. Jesus came to them walking on the water. They were scared. Peter called out for Jesus to call him to come. He stepped out in faith on the water, but was quickly overcome with the situation and the storm, and he began to sink. Jesus immediately reached out and saved him. My point is not to retell the story, but to focus on Peter. He had zest for Jesus. He was willing to risk to follow. But he became distracted. Do we allow our lives to distract us from following? When weather/life is good, we obey...but when storms come, where are we?

With Authority!

With AUTHORITY, that is how Jesus speaks. Much different from any past prophet or king. Jesus has command over nature (ch8), death (ch9), and His disciples (ch10). There are quite a few miracles performed in chs 8-9 that are more fully unpacked in Luke and John. Ch10 has some real meat as Jesus authorizes his disciples and sends them out. Note in 10:38 his reference to "taking up your cross daily"...incredible prediction of his death. That is a challenge for us each day, to take up our cross and follow him. Never mind what the world will throw at us, Jesus has the authority and power to overcome. Ch10:28 makes this point very clear. Finally in ch11, Jesus verifies John the Baptist as the prophecized front runner to the Messiah (ch11:10) as noted in Malachi 4:5. Jesus is the ONE!

There is Depth

Matthew condenses much wisdom from Jesus into 24 chpts. Obviously too small to contain so much. His purpose in writing was to inform the Jewish audience that the long awaited Messiah had come, and it was Jesus! In ch5-7 Matthew chronicles Jesus' teachings from our Holy actions (being kind to one another, even those who are unfriendly-ch5v47), to Holy attitudes (tithing/prayer-ch6v4-8), and then to Holy judgment (treat others as you want to be treated-ch7,v2). I struggle to remember where various parables and teachings of Jesus are in the Gospels because there are so many. One could get lost in a single ch or verse. After all, it is the God of the universe teaching. One could never ask for a better owner's manual! Jesus only taught on earth for 3 yrs. There is depth to His few words.

The Solution

Welcome to the NT! Over 9 months we have read through the OT, covering 2,000 years of history. All of it oleading to a solution of the problem of our separation from God (sin). Now, on to the reconciliation. Matthew begins his gospel written to a Jewish audience by proving the lineage of Jesus as part of the line of King David, and as such, one of the line of God's chosen. Many times Matthew points out to his audience how prophecy has been fulfilled. The Jewish audience would know the OT, thus be able to piece together who Jesus was....the Messiah. In ch3 we meet John the Baptist. Luke's gospel has more detail, but John is sent as the forerunner. He confronts the religious powers in ch3v8. Prove by the way you live. We should heed that today!

Sunday, September 30, 2012

And then there was silence...

Malachi, at last! We conclude the OT today with yet another stern warning from God through His prophet Malachi. Again, God's message is that sin must be dealt with. The chosen have turned away and not kept the law. Note ch2v17...how often do we fall into that line of thought! Who are we to question God? Ch3v6 is key, "I am the Lord, and do not change". God is still with us even today. He ends the OT with continued warning against the traps of sin, but does give hope in a solution to come! Ch4v5 talks about his coming. This was the end of direct communication for 400 years. Why the wait? Time matters not to God. He doesn't change. But He gives us an opportunity to do so!

Don't miss Jesus in Zechariah

Keeping in mind that Zechariah wrote around 500BC, you have to marvel at the detailed accuracy in which God inspired him to prophecy. Read ch12v10-11. You cannot miss Jesus. In fact, the final 3 chs of Zech are revealing end times. These are not written to scare, but to warn and to keep believers on the ready. Time is running short, and as believers, we have an obligation to warn others. Are we truly ready? Time to get ourselves out of our comfort zone and take this seriously. Jesus has power in Zech. How can we miss it?

Thursday, September 27, 2012

We do have a choice!

Zechariah wrote and prophesized around 500BC. Read ch9v9-10. God is truly in control and knows what is to come. But He allows us to choose, He will not force anyone to accept Him. However, He will not release us from the consequences of our choice! What we do today will matter. Do all with that on your mind! It is truly amazing how God gave Zech a vision of the king arriving on the donkey 500 years before it happened. See John ch12v14-15. Is there anything God cannot do? Yes. He cannot act contrary to His promises; He will not contradict His written word; and He will not accept evil. Thank you Jesus for stepping in and doing what we could not. The choice is ours, as are the consequences of that choice...

Find Him Again!

What is your prayer life temperature? Is it difficult to find time for such activity? If your fervor and commitment for God's work have been waning, chances are you need to stop and refocus on the wonderful character of God. The Israelites were wondering how to procedurally restart things in Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, as noted in Zechariah. Ch 7-8 talk about fasting. Zechariah's message from God was that the way you live is more important than the way you fast. Don't give in to empty rituals! Come back and refocus on God. Look at His creation. Marvel at how He made a perfect solution for us. Thank Him for His involvement in our meager lives. Find Him again!

The coming Wrath

Warnings before sin...Isaiah 21-23 carry out further warnings against Israel's neighbors, but ch22 includes Jerusalem! It is amazing how we see and cheer on justice for others, but think we are spotless. God is providing warnings to Judah to change. But when you think you are doing right, why change! When you are allowing yourself into temptation, and thus planning to sin, you can justify your actions or allow the passion to help you overlook it. However, the remorse afterwards....if only there was a pre-warning about the remorse you'll feel. There is, God's Word and the Holy Spirit! We need to heed both, or suffer in the consequences of our sin. Isaiah gave this message to Judah and surrounding areas. For that, he was led to years of isolation and being outcast. But he was right

Events to come...

Happy Friday! We begin the book of Isaiah. This book follows an outline of the whole Bible. There are 66 chapters, of which the first 39 are devoted to Jerusalem's folly, judgement and condemnation. The latter 27 chapters offer hope and reconciliation. There is much foreshadowing and prophecy revealed in Jesus also. Written around 700 BC, Isaiah remarkably hits key events in the future. Actually it is not remarkable, as God is inspiring him in the writing. During the time of the writing, the Assyrians have control and are opressing Judah. Israel (northern kingdom has fallen). The people of Judah have fallen into sinful patterns and basically turned from God. Ch1 v10-17 detail how fed up God is. But ch1v18 gives us hope. Jesus also uses this wording during his earthly ministry. Ch2 offers some interesting prophecy.

Building others...

Making preparations, getting ready. After all, you plan out things to pack for a trip, why not plan out a significant building project? In 1 Chronicles 22-27, we read about King David's planning out of the temple project, including who will serve, how they will serve, when and for how long they will serve. To a casual reader, these chapters might be easy to gloss over, but God felt it was important enough to include in scripture for over 2,000 years! A key to David's planning was to make not only the project successful, but the one leading it, his son Solomon! Think about how you are making those around you successful. Even John the Baptist realized his role and said that he must diminish and Christ increase. Great lesson of humility and sacrifice (living) to be

Do Unto Others....

ek!
In 2 Samuel 5-7, David is bringing Israel together as one nation. He is truly a servant of God and seeks His guidance over everything he does. We see a sad event in ch 6 where the Israelites are moving the Ark of God to David's capital. Unfortunately, the cart it is on stumbles and one of the cart drivers reaches his hand out to steady it and is struck down by God. How unfair you say. But, were they carrying the ark the proper way? No poles, rather placed on a cart.....someone needed to review Leviticus for proper instructions!
In ch 7 v 18 David receives God's blessings and asks a very important question...."who am I....that you have brought me this far?". A good question that we could ask even today....

Is Jesus who He claimed to be....

Good Monday all! Yesterday, we spoke of encouragement. Today, we will keep that theme going. It IS going to be a great week! We are nearing the end of the Old Testament. Kudos to you who have followed and kept up. If you have struggled, take heart. There are many things that are difficult to understand. The question you must ask is "Is Jesus who he claimed to be". You might say that Jesus has not even come on the scene yet, this is the OT! But, this whole Bible is about Jesus! It is by Him all things were made. It is by Him that we are back in relationship with God. And it is by Him that peace will be achieved. Zechariah and others wrote almost in code about his coming. They knew God had a plan. And so do we....

Encouraging words!

Encouragement! That is the message Zechariah brings to the returnees from Babylonian exile. He encourages the rebuilding of the temple, not just for worship now, but for the coming Messiah! Zechariah is a contemporary of Haggai, who we just read. Haggai used rebuking to get the people motivated to build the temple. Zech uses encouragement. Great point: we are put on this earth not to see through one another, but to see one another through! Have a great Sunday and pass some encouragement along!

Patience required!

Selective following is a way to describe the people's response to God's message through Jeremiah in ch40-45. Jeremiah prayed to God on the people's behalf, only to have the people reject the response. Don't laugh or judge, we do the same! We choose certain parts of God's law to follow, then brush off the others that are too hard. We ask God for direction, then feel we need to help Him. We desire a shiny new penny we see, rather than waiting for God to give us the treasure chest of gold He has for us. Like a stubborn child, we act like we can do it ourselves. Jeremiah's words should be a warning to us even today. We ask God for help or guidance, we need to wait until He provides it!

God allows U-turns!

"If I knew I had to face my God and Judge tomorrow and account for my life, I would spend my time doing......" What? How do we complete that sentence? God gives us time.....and plenty of warning! The prophet Zephaniah warned the people of Judah of the impending doom that was to come on them as a result of their unfaithfulness. It was not their lack of knowledge about God's will, but rather a lack of willingness to do what they knew to be right. Does that sound familiar today? Say it ain't so...Zephaniah prophecized in 630BC! We truly do not learn from the past. Take heart, there is a message of hope in Zep ch2v3. God allows U-turns!

The righteous live by faith

What have you gained by worshipping all of your man-made idols? The prophet Habakkuk asks this in his book ch2. Habakkuk struggles with a similar question of other prophets, "How is it that the wicked prosper?". God assures Habakkuk that the wicked will be dealt with, in God's way on God's time. God reminds Habakkuk in ch2:4 that the righteous will live by faith. Are we doing that today? Or is faith something we merely reserve for a few hours on Sunday? I too struggle to rest on God's timing. I am impatient, wanting action. Perhaps God is wanting a period of rest or reflection. The wicked do not prosper, there is always more to conquer. It is never satisfying.

What makes a leader?

So what makes a leader? How do you know a good leader when you see one? Why would you follow? The prophet Micah talks about a coming leader who will bring peace. He notes the failures of Israel's "leaders" in their self absorbed lust for power and riches. Jesus led, yet he owned nothing. Solomon led, yet he failed and his kingdom was divided after he died. Being a leader means keeping hope alive in others. They serve, they focus on others not themselves. They balance sensitivity with responsibility. All of this matters as to who you will follow. And why. Think on that as you "worship" this week.....

Who deserves mercy?

There are over 120,000 living in spiritual darkness. Washington County? Perhaps. But directly I speak from the words written in Jonah. You know this familiar tale and probably have watched the Veggie Tale movie...which is quite good! But read Jonah's anger towards God in ch3. He is mad at God for showing love and compassion. A very strange thing to be mad about. If there were more love in the world, we think it could be a better place. But God is showing love and mercy to Israel's enemy....Assyria! How would we feel about God showing grace to our enemies? Slighted? Unfair! After all, we love God more than they! We live by His law! We worship Him. But is not God's love for all? Did Jesus command we spread the Gospel to all the ends of the earth? Do we even deserve mercy?

Monday, September 10, 2012

What do you own?

Ever have the uncomfortable duty to call someone out on something they were doing that was not right? Amos had that responsibility. He had to call Israel into coming judgment for their abandoning of God. The people rejeted him. They were too caught up in their high living. Wealth and prosperity were thought to be security. They forgot that it was only temporary, and that God is not just the "previous" owner. They failed to realize that enjoying things from God had replaced enjoying God himself! Instead of owning their possessions and wealth, they became owned by them! How different are we? What possession could you absolutely not do without? How long have you had it? How did you get it? That possession is not God!

Signs of things to come

: The Book of Joel offers interesting insight to end times prophecy, even though it was written around 850BC. What is the purpose of the prophecy? To warn God's people to repent, with their hearts, not just outward ritual. Joel uses swarms of locusts to tear down the people. Are the locusts figurative? Perhaps of invading armies, hard times, droughts? What locusts do we face today? How are our hearts toward them? Are we angry? Do we feel the need for repentance? Joel assures us in ch2v25 that God will give back what the locust have taken. God is in the love business, which means he wants to forgive, but we must be truly sorry. Ch2,v28 is borrowed by Peter at Penecost in Acts ch2v16-21. Signs preceeding Christ's second coming!

Heeding the prophet's warning!

Biblically speaking we are coming to a close with Hosea. His writing has warned Israel. He spoke of the rebellious past, the omnious calamity of the future, and the need for present change. We can relate. The past is done, the future is uncertain. We need to change our hearts here in the present! God is giving us time to adjust. We have the info, now we need to apply it! Hosea's life was not easy, neither is some of ours. But God is with us and for us, we need not fear! Remember, if God seems distant from you, it must mean you have moved!

Tuesday, September 4, 2012

We need God

In Hosea ch 9-11, we read of God's continued faithfulness and Israel's continued rebellion. Hosea reminds Israel how God has helped time and again yet Israel returns to idolatry. Ch11v7 sums it up,"they call me the Most High, but they don't truly honor me". We pray to God to give us "our" list but do we truly honor Him? Do we have a healthy fear and respect for Him? Do we seek Him, or just call on Him when we need something, like a genie in a bottle. God has warned us in His word and His son. This is not something to take lightly. Don't fall into the trap of self sufficiency. We need God.

Faithfulness is thy God

Welcome to Sep and to the minor prophets! In Hosea ch1-3 we see a prophet of God married to a promiscuous woman. She continually leaves him in search of other lovers. Even after Hosea has fathered children and provided a safe home for her, she continues her quest for others. Later, Hosea had to buy his own wife back. Sound familiar? Ok, perhaps not with a wife in prostitution, but definitely a wayward people searching for answers outside of the one true God who has them! How often do we worship our idols? Is that not the same? It is showing lack of commitment to God. Notice how Hosea is faithful and takes back his wife. God takes us back too. This is a story of the faithfulness of God even when we pursue others.

What does it mean? only time will tell

As we end August, we come to the end of Daniel (ch10-12). There is almost too much to understand in this prophetic vision. Kingdoms, wars and power are won and lost. It appears to be a horrific future. And it was. We can look back in history to see the prophecies unfolding in the likes of Alex. The Great of Greece. While certainly interesting, it is not the point of the writing. The point is that God is in control and has a plan. We will not know this plan for certain until it occurs. But,, rest assured,, the righteous will be purified and the wicked punished. We don't know the day,, time or even year this will happen. Many have tried to calculate using Biblical clues, but failed. Jesus even said "like a thief in the night". Are you prepared? Get right now, before you cant!

Thursday, August 30, 2012

What do you see?

Today we enter into the confusing part of Daniel's prophecy, Dan ch 7--9. There are strange beasts and heavenly visions. There is the angel Gabriel helping Daniel understand. Finally there is hope restored. Hindsight is perfect, but what about looking ahead. We can read and study Daniel (as many have) and interpret its meaning and what kingdoms are represented. We can see how Daniel predicted history to un fold. However, it would appear that history is not done yet. What still lies ahead for us? Christ's second coming for one. Are we ready? Are we at peace with those around us? Have we decided to truly trust God? Let your actions outspeak your words. And may you be the vessel God uses for His purpose today!

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

God is in control

Daniel ch4-6. What made Daniel great? After all, he was able to interpret dreams, explain visions and overcome hungry lions. God enabled him not to build up Daniel rather to show the power of God! Daniel was faithful, and for that we read of his example today. God doesn't change and is still all powerful. Our response is to trust in Him. Time after time, earthly kings see the divine power, yet they do not change. They might respect that power, but they do not change. Do we change? Intellectual knowledge and understanding is one thing. But it needs to be in your heart and actions! Daniel was obedient. He did not strive for personal glory as seen in ch5v17. Do we put credit where credit is due, or do we bask in the glory? God is all powerful and He is in control!

Monday, August 27, 2012

Daniel, an example of faithfulness.

Beginnings anew! School starts today the kids are excited. We begin a new book as well, Daniel! Ch1-3 tell about how Daniel and his friends came to be in Babylon captivity. He writes how God has blessed them and provided for them. Daniel's interpretation of Neb's dream in ch2 is quite the forshadowing of events to come. Ch3 though has something important. Daniel's 3 friends are condemned to die in a firey furnace for not worshipping the king. V16-18 show their faithfulness in God. Oh that we would all show this kind of faith. Note the king's response to their success in v28. Are we willing to die, or be "inconvenienced" for God? Will we stand up for our beliefs, or give in to pressure? The world will persecute us, but God will prevail! He gives us the example of Daniel.

Hope beyond our ability

Ezekiel 37-39, there is hope. Ch37 has the story of Ezekiel's vision of the valley of the dry bones. These bones come together and form humans again, a clear message of the restoration of God's people. Interesting that in Jesus, not a bone was broken! What is our hope in today? Our paycheck, our car, our own ability? God has bigger and better plans! Why limit yourself. If God can defeat whole armies (ch38,39), can't he see you through one day? Parts of the Old Testament might seem unrelated to us, but they matter, and they point to the solution of reconciliation that God provided through Jesus. Do we thank Him enough for this? Let me encourage you to marvel at His creation and thank Him for the work done that we could never do!

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Be a willing vessel

I have continued my reading through Ezekiel, hope you have kept up. The message became very redundant, so I didn't write. But ch33 is pretty noteworthy. We have an obligation, a duty to spread the gospel to others. We will be held responsible! We are not responsible for others' salvation or acceptance. Time is drawing near, so do not delay in the relationships you have! Ezekiel's message is repentance, turn turn from wickedness! How many of us live each day thinking there will be a tomorrow? We procrastinate, we wait. We might not feel up to the task. Remember, it is not your words or efforts, it is the Holy Spirit working within you. You merely need to be the vessel. Regret is an awful feeling!

Saturday, August 18, 2012

It is our responsibility!

Fickelness? That doesn't even begin to describe Ezekiel's message. He likens the people to prostitutes who pay people for their services! Reading in ch16-19, try to replace America of today for Israel of yesterday. It is not too hard or too much of a stretch! God blessed us with freedom, and we have taken His work for granted. How many of us even know Him? How many have read his word? At least we know the latest DWTS gossip. Ezekiel writes on the subject of personal accountability. We cannot blame on others, our parents, or our environs! Ch18v19 declares this to be so. Also, ch18v30 will hold us each personally accountable! Turn from your sins! It is a warning, it is not too late! Let us not abuse or misuse what God has blessed us with!

Where were you when the world stopped turning

What would we do if Wash DC was invaded and destroyed? How did we feel as the WTC towers fell? Violated, hurt, mad, and scared? Jeremiah writes his Lamentations on the fall and destruction of Jerusalem. It is his funeral dirge for the city. Ch1v20 pronounces this loudly, as does ch2v11. However, the message changes in ch3. Starting in v21, Jeremiah lays out his hope in God. The unfailing love of God never ends! Great is His faithfulness! He has hope in the Lord! Jeremiah goes on to accept the scouraging from Judah's enemies as if it were from God....and it was! V40, he impores those to examine their ways and turn to God in repentance. We experienced a little of that after 9-11, but that has faded. Only some of us still cling to the hope God has provided!

Bad Immunity

Wrapping up Jeremiah today ch 46-52. Jeremiah relates the prophecy of God's discipline on surrounding nations. Those who worship other gods and ignore the one true God will receive their fate. The prophecy is a warning. How often do we heed the warnings today? Do we turn from our convictions of ways we know to be wrong, or do we ignore God's warnings to us to the point they become mere background noise. Change is needed. God desires us to repent and turn from evil ways, not gloss them over as "not really that bad". Of all the nations with mighty armies mentioned by Jeremiah, only Egypt remains, and that could be changing! God's prophecies come true, we ought not test them!

Popluarity is not as important as being right!

Being the bearer of bad news is not easy. Jeremiah faced this in ch 37-39. It was his duty from God to tell the king of Judah that unless he surrendered the Babylonians were going to burn the city of Jerusalem. However, to tell the king this could mean his life as a traitor or non faithful Judean! Jeremiah was faithful to God and delivered an unpopular message to the king. He suffered physically as the result, but lived. In the midst of trials and discouragements, it's more important than ever to check your focus. Are you looking at your problem or your Problem Solver? Stay true to God, even when it doesn't seem to make logical sense!

Cannot pick and choose

Pick and choose, is that how we are to read God's Word? In Jer ch 34-36 ,we read of King Jehoiakim having Jeremiah's prophecy from God read and then cutting it up and throwing it into a fire! What blasphemy we say! Yet don't we do similar when we pick and choose which of God's commands we follow? Is it better to not know, or to know and choose to not follow? Certainly doom happened to the king, what waits for us? If I'd only..... Don't let that sentence be on your lips. God has given us another day to make things right. Repentance is more than just being sorry or ashamed. It is absolutely turning from wickedness. Make a decision to read the Word with a responsive heart! Make the decision to accept and follow. And not just the parts you like!

Count on it!

Count on it! That is Jeremiah's message in ch 30-33. He is prophecying things to come, promises that God has made. At the current time of his writing, the Babylonians are about to take over in brutal fashion. Things look bleak. But remember, God's ways and timing are not ours! Our faith is often weak or anxious. We need concrete results! We often fail to see and understand the work God is doing in us. We might see it after a time, if we look. God reveals himself and His plan to us, if we know how to look. Jer ch33:3 God says Ask me and I will tell you some remarkable secrets about what is going to happen! Don't stop listening before you hear!

Understand before you speak

How do we heed warnings? Do we analyze the message, or the messenger? Do we pick and choose which message we "like" best and follow it? These are tough questions to honestly answer today, just as they were in Jeremiah's time. He would bring forth a message of repentance from the Lord, only to be contested by another self-appointed "prophet" with a nicer message. Jer ch26-29 show this with Hananiah. Ch28v17 tell how that ends. When we talk for the Lord, we need to be prepared for the results. God wants us to tell others about Him, but not to put words into His mouth. God knows what His plans are for us. Check out ch29v11-13. So how can we tell true warnings? They should be consistent with scripture and led by God, not just a fleeting impulse you might have. Trust and verify!

WORSHIP....more than a list

In Jeremiah 7-10, the point is reiterated that thinking that their priviledged position as God's chosen people will ensure their immunity from God's wrath, the people continue in a pattern of worthless worship. Perhaps Jeremiah is talking about the future, perhaps it is us. Do we live for God, or is He merely someone we go to with needs. Do we worship, or only request. I cannot look at nature without a wonder about God. His creation is amazing. It is amazing how God holds the whole together. So in our worship, do we acknowledge God's greatness, or just give Him our daily list....

Our response matters...

How do we heed warnings? Do we really listen and believe, or do we say that it won't be so bad? I know I shrug off the warnings thinking I can get through by my own strength, knowledge, or ability. Perhaps this is how the people of Judah felt when Jeremiah came with his warnings from God. Jeremiah 1-6 talk about the impending wrath to be poured out. He discussed the problem of reliance on idols and false gods. Even today we place our faith and security in false gods! See ch2v28-29. How often do we hear that today? People live like there is no God and thus no consequences, yet when something happens, we look to God and say "how could you let this happen". This was occuring in Jeremiah's day as well. Nothing new under the sun...except how we respond to wanrings perhaps!

Not to be taken lightly

Greetings fellow students of theology! Today, we finish Isaiah. Ch 58-66. A lot of reading, but a common theme....God exhaults the humble, the Messiah is coming, and one day, all will worship God! Some warnings though, don't take God lightly, don't ignore His warnings, and don't ignore His invitations. Ch58v4 reminds us about being luke-warm. Ch59v1 reminds us God is with us. Ch 64v5-8 reminds us how and who we are, mere clay! Ch65v20-25 comforts us with a renewed life, heavens and earth. And ch66,v2-3 remind us not to take this lightly! In all, Isaiah was a long book, filled with prophecy and warnings. Ch53 really stuck out to me as one to re-read. How similar is Jerusalem of Isaiah's time with America today? God has warned us, pay heed! Now, get ready to weep with Jeremiah!

God's plan revealled!!!

In 700 years...I cannot finish that sentence, for I haven't a clue what the future holds. God knows and reveals it to us. He gave the prophecy to Isaiah 700 years before Jesus' earthly ministry, yet, if you read ch 53, you'd think it was first hand observation at the foot of the cross. I don't know how people misunderstand ch53v8. This is how God reconciled man to Himself! The Jews were given this solution 700 years in advance! We have this solution completed today! How do we use it? How do we rejoice in the victory? Ch55v8-9 sum up our understanding of God. His was are different from ours. We want power, might and decisive victory! That is exactly what Jesus did. But we fail to see it. What power it must have taken to absorb those nail blows and not strike back. More than i have...

God sees the heart!

Did ya miss me? I've been struggling through Isaiah, today reading ch 49-51. It is amazing to me how Isaiah wrote about things 500 to 600 years before they took place. Of course, his pen was inspired by God who knows the whole story. A common theme throughout this book is one of disobedience. The people of Israel have substituted man-made rules over whole-hearted worship. Eerily, this could apply to us today! God continues to love and offer solutions, the ultimate one in Jesus, which Isaiah prophecizes numerour times. Isaiah is presenting us with a choice...either get with God, or don't. Half-hearted measures are not the way. We cannot give lip service for God knows what is in our hearts! Take Isaiah as a warning, but also as encouragement. God loves us and will provide!

To whom shall we turn!

As we pick up in Isaiah 40-43, we see the tone of his message change from judgement to payment. The solution is God HIMSELF. He is involved! See ch40v27-30. He has been involved and still is. Note the mocking of idols in ch41v28-29. Yet, even today, we rely or try to find comfort in these idols. Money, possessions, title, etc... We make up for our emptiness and fear with these. Over and over again, God calls us to Him. In the wake of the Colorado shootings, did we turn to God for comfort, or the court system? In our lives closer to home, do we ask God to guide us in leading our families, or does the calendar of activities rule? God is the solution. Isaiah saw it over 2500 years ago. We can read it in His word. If we choose to take the time....

placing our faith

Reading in Isaiah 31-35, we see the prophecy of destruction as well as the promise of Hope in a new King. To those who trust in weapons or numbers of men, Isaiah says the end is near. But hose who trust in God, will have a future. Our things today cannot give back to us any more than the chariots of Egypt. Your money, house, car, etc cannot save. But in ch32, Isaiah notes the coming solution. A righteous king is coming. From our point of history, He is coming back. The work of defeating death and evil is done. Now, it is time to call the faithful and bring peace. Isaiah was given this glimpse over 2500 years ago. We should heed it today!

Will we listen and heed the warning?

In Isaiah 28-30, we learn why Isaiah was not invited to many parties. Seriously though, these chapters give the heart of Isaiah's warning. Self reliance, or even reliance on other's physical strength is no match for the Lord! Several times Isaiah notes that the clay pot is not superior to the potter who makes it! Ch29v13-15 are key to understanding this. Human wisdom is foolish. Hiding our intensions from God is equally foolish. Yet we do it all the time. We become comforted in darkness so we do not have to see truth from the light. Ch30v18 is a real keeper. God loves us and will wait. Amazing! I know what I do and would not wait, yet God does it for me, and everyone else. Too bad the crowds did not heed Isaiah's warnings. Will we today?

warnings before sin

But he was right!

Who is the mightiest?

Isaiah 17-20 remind us that even the mightiest are no match for God. When we put our hopes in power as defined by man, we fall way short of God. The mighty Egyptians, Assyrians and Ethiopians all were warned of destruction. God warns us too when we do not rely on Him, preferring to try it our way. We scramble over pennies when God has $100 bills for us. Remember, God loves us and wants us to thrive. But we must seek Him. He cannot be the afterthought or the one we go to after we have failed. We cannot live like He does not exist, then try to blame Him when things don't go our way. Seek Him!

Monday, July 16, 2012

He loves us this much

Isaiah 9-12. Even though God must punish the people, he also provides a solution. Isaiah writes about this salvation solution in ch9v6-7. Any questions? Also, ch11v10-11. This was written 700 years before Jesus. This seems like it could fit in the opening chapters of Matthew. An important point to make is that God is sending a solution. Man does not need to go anywhere, do anything or say any chants or songs! Why would God provide the solution, and then bring it to us while we reject Him? Love. He loves us, beyond what we understand love to be. Think on that as you read man's solution in ch9v20. We are so unworthy!

Heeding the warning!

Isaiah 5-8 prophesizes Judah's destruction, and provides for deliverance. Ch5v24-25 show God's anger towards the people. Yet in His grace, he allows Isaiah a glimpse into heaven in ch6. Isaiah is sent forth with his message from God to warn Judah. But they will not listen. Then, in ch7, the ultimate solution is previewed. Ch7v14 talks about the coming of Immanuel, the child of the virgin. Finally, in ch8, Isaiah declares that Judah will be destroyed and that people will burn in anger at God for allowing this calamity. Interesting that we choose to live apart from God's instruction, yet bristle at the effects! We, like the people of Judah, want to do it our way. When the fall comes (and it will), we are shocked that God could allow that to happen. Like John the Baptist, warning to repent, Isaiah is carrying similar warnings. Perhaps there is a warning calling out today!

Jerusalem to become the focal point? Say it isn't so! And finally, ch2 v22, something we should keep in mind. Trust in God, not mere men. Let's get groovin!

Passion is not decriptive enough!

Whew, today is Song of Solomon. Pretty hot stuff. Hard to imagine little old ladies and pompous folks carrying around a Bible with this book in it. This is really something to be read with your wife. In a quiet place where you can be alone. It is not smut or sexually charged. Rather, there is passion, love and forgiveness. Solomon praises his beloved, noting her beauty and value to him. The mighty king is spellbound by her. Perhaps this is God's love for his people and creation. Perhaps this is foreshadowing Christ's love for the church. Don't miss reading the intense desire!

Finishing strong

Ecclesiastes ch 7-12 concludes that not only is there futility in what you do and in what you have, but apart from God there is futility in what you are. Ch7v1, a good reputation is more valuable than the most expensive perfume. And how quickly a reputation can be ruined. Ch7v8, finishing is better than starting. It seems that Solomon is cautioning us not to get lazy or rest on our laurels. We need continued diligence to God. In fact ch 11v9 reports that we must give an accounting to God for everything we do. God knows our thoughts, actions and secrets. Are you free from the shackles of your secrets? If your time ended today, would there be any evidence of you living separately from what friends know? Clean it up now before it is too late. How many reputations are ruined after death, when the truth about someone's life comes out. Ch12v13-14, Fear God!

Everything is meaningless?

Today, we begin Ecclesiastes, written by Solomon. Ch 1-4 begin in somewhat depressing fashion as Solomon points out that there is nothing new under the sun, and that everything under the sun is meaningless. Solomon has lived with all of man's pleasures and experienced more than most and has concluded it to be meaningless apart from God. See ch 2v24. I can relate in Solomon's vanquish in that I am never satisfied for long. I pursue wealth, only wanting more. I pursue pleasure, only wanting more. I pursue security, only wanting more. It is through God that I feel most satisfied. Knowing God will protect and provide gives me more safety and security than anything else. Solomon was right. Without God, everything under the sun IS meaningless!

End of wisdom, or just the beginning!

we finish Prov. Ch30 by Agur summarizes the themes of wisdom and folly, greed and gluttony, and adultry and hypocrisy. See v 8, "Give me just enough to satisfy my needs", doesn't say desires! Also, check out vv25-28. Think about that before stepping! Prov Ch 31 by King Lemuel discuss a virtuous wife. We kid about this in certain circles but the reality is that it is our job as men and husbands to set our wives up for this success. V28b is key "Her husband praises her". How often do we as husbands do this for our wives? Of all the qualities described, can any be said of us men? Wives generally want a partner, not a boss. Make sure to re-read Proverbs often. There is life giving guidance. It is really the one-fits all tool!

Truly words to live by

: Prov 25-29. Solomon really puts forth timeless truths. He goes along covering several topics and really giving one cause to stop and think. Ch 26v11, learning from past mistakes. Ch27v6, accountability. Ch 28v22, greed. Ch29v23, pride. How many of these apply to us daily? Ch27v23, know your flocks. What is your wife or child's favorite color? What is their favorite meal? What is their love language? These are things a good shepherd knows. We study work, Bible (hopefully), but what about our flocks? If you were to stare into your wife/child's eyes, would a deep conversation start, or would it be weird? If weird, you need to start doing this more often. Solomon's Proverbs are timeless truths to live by. So get going!

What is our hope in?

Proverbs (22-24) are filled with wise sayings regarding character, humility, and personal responsibility. A good reputation is better than riches. Conduct yourself with integrity. That should really be what Christians are about. Too often we glamourize fame and fortune. People become obsessed with celebrity. What determines success? Teaching children is repeated in today's reading, so it must be important. As parents, we have a responsibility to build character in our children. While doing this, we build it in ourselves! Ch 23v17 is a key one to remember. Our future is not dictated by posessions, fame or power. Graves are full of these people! Don't forget where your hope is and live today like you know it is true!

Counting the cost

Today, in Prov ch 18-21, there are many a nugget of wisdom to follow. Overwhelmingly so! Ch 18v11-12 really sum up much of today's section. Our pride can lead to our destruction. Having pride in our kids, work done well, or from helping another is not wrong, as long as we realize that the ability to do these is from God. See ch19v21, another saying of making plans, but the Lord is really in control. Wanna make God laugh, tell him what you will do tomorrow. Ch 20, v14 is a good one for all of us yard sale revellers from yesterday's mile-long sale. Finally, ch20v25 is one to really think on. Jesus even reminded us to count the cost. We need to do this daily, hourly, every second. Check your actions! From my experience, it IS worth it!

Freedom and dependence!

Happy Independence Day! As we celebrate the courage of the nation's founding fathers in declaring themselves free from England, take time to remember why they had that courage. It was their faith in God. We should be independent of man's absolute rule, but dependent on God. In Prov 14-17, we see wisdom in daily conduct. So many words and phrases of wisdom, it can become overwhelming. Ch 16 v3,7&9 are three that really hit home for me. Focus and reliance on God. V9 is crucial, "we can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps". Keep in mind that the best laid plans begin in prayer. So today, celebrate your freedom, read the Declaration of Ind, and thank God for His guidance!

Wisdom vs. Folly

Wow, today's Proverbs (ch 10-13) come at you rapid fire. The overall theme is "when people rebel against God, they end destroying themselves". So true. Some seem to prosper for at least a time. But it doesn't last. Frustration, the constant craving for more, the emptiness. Without God, it is truly meaningless. Ever sense something inside that feels hollow? Perhaps that is where the joy of following God should be. I have sensed that on many an occassion when I began thinking about how successful or righteous I had become. It is hard to convince ourselves when we really know the truth. Trust inGod and He will set you free. Wisdom vs folly. How to get wisdom...pray and follow God's will and word!

Is it truly worth it?

today, we cruise through Prov 5-9. We are gonna fly through these to stay on the Bible 1 year reading plan. I recommend reading through the Prov with a friend, 1 per day. Thought for today's readings..."the invitation you choose to accept will determine whether you find virtue or vice". Ah, the outcome of not listening, see ch 5 v 12-13. We've all been there. And in v 22, evil man is captured by his own sins. Is the web of lies we need tell really worth it? In ch8,v8-9, Solomon declares that the instructions are clear and plain to anyone. Seems so simple. Then why do we veer off course? The icing always looks soooo good. But how much cake will make us happy? After eating, you feel full and probably say "I really didn't need that". Solomon simply puts forth, be disciplined, the outcome is so much better!

trust in the Lord!

Welcome to July, and the Proverbs! The purpose of Proverbs is spelled out in ch1, to teach wisdom and discipline. These were mostly written by King Solomon, one of the wisest men to ever live. Ch 1-4 really set the tone. Ch1v7 is a key verse to cut and paste somewhere that you might see it daily. Fear there does not mean fright, rather a healthy respect. Ch3v5-6 are another keepsake. We would be wise to follow. Anguish seems to take hold when we try to lead ourselves! Be careful while reading these to not start a mental checklist of all the things you are doing right. I have fallen into that trap. I start thinking more highly of myself than i ought. Ch4v23 is another key verse. Our heart is our passion and drive. It is what truly directs our actions. Be well to guard it!

Praise the Lord!!!

Praise the Lord! We finish Psalms today ch 145-150. We have spent the last month praising the creator, the provider, the protector, the guide, the strength and the love, among other names too vast to mention. It is like we've spent the past month singing or preparing our hearts for worship. Even the chapters of Psalms seem to end in the last few in crescendo fashion! Now that our attentions are focused and our hearts prepared, lets get to the meat....Proverbs. Find a buddy and really go deeper into the Proverbs, one chpter per day. But watch yourself, there are lions out there!

Ask and follow His lead

Good Friday! Well not "THE" good Friday. Today we plow forth in Ps 140-145. These are written by David to express his love for God, his confidence in God's plan a nd protection, and a desire to see God's justice prevail. We all like it when good wins right? When our team triumphs (see Fall 2012 Redskins). David is not only cheering on his wishes and justice from God, he is cheering it on for ALL who believe! Good accountability verse in ch 141v5. Allow yourself to be corrected by brothers in the faith! But it should not be someone alone! Ch 143v8-show me where to walk, for I have come to you in prayer. Allow God to lead, He will not steer you wrong!

Understand it is for our sake!

Ps 136 is a great example of how scripture cannot just be read or verses plucked out for separate use unless you take into account the whole context, people, places, and purpose for the writing. Check out Ps 136 v 10. "Killed the firstborn of Egypt, his LOVE endures forever"...now without knowing the context of the writing, I'd say that the killing of someone does not really show love. In Ps 139, the psalmist writes about God being all knowing, all powerful, and everywhere. In that case, why do we need to pray? He should already know! HE DOES! We don't pray for Him to work, He is not a genie we release from a lamp. No, we pray to show our reliance and devotion. To get ourselves out of the way to focus on God. The final verses are key, Ps 139 v 23-24. Search me...know me.

Keeping track?

We are really rollin through the Psalms. Today, we cover 128-134. These are still songs sung during pilgrimmages to Jerusalem. They were sung as reminders of why the Israelites were coming to worship. It was a time to purify oneself and focus on God. Too bad we don't do pilgrimmages like that today. What a time of refreshing! I know that after a good service, I am charged for a time. Keeping in mind how awesome God is, in Ps 130 v 3&4, He could keep track of our sins. But instead, He forgives and blots them out. Do we keep track of how and who has wronged us? Can you imagine letting that go? It is truly weight we do not need to carry. Take a mental trip today. Praise God for His mercy and forgiveness. Hold a key verse of His word in your heart and find yourself refreshed! Call a loved one and share it!

Monday, June 25, 2012

He is truly in control!

We pick back up in Ps 120-127. These are basically travelling songs that the Israelites would sing on their pilgrimmage to Jerusalem. Many times in today's body, we pray for traveling mercies. One point that is continually made is how God is consistent and has taken care of the nation in the past. Continual reminders of how God is in control. Life can take some scary turns. It is important to remember that God is in control. Ps 127 makes this point echoing Joshua, "unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is in vain". Yes, God has got this under his control, but we still must make the pilgrimage!

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Be ready

Do you have your story ready? Can you easily tell others of your decision? Can you explain your faith? Ps 107 starts off that way. Speak out! Tell others what God has done for you! We will brag about a new car, or even new countertops. But what about bragging to others what God has done and is doing in our lives? How would someone even know we are believers? While getting a haircut yesterday, the barber was making small talk. He saw my shirt with company logo and we started talking about a mutual accquaintence that works there. The short of it is, he is a Christian also. We talked longer than the haircut. Be ready, you never know when opportunity knocks.

A Little Reminder

If you have not kept up, or did not start to begin with, today's Ps (104-106) are a great recap of the first 5 books of the Bible. As i read this and think of all that the Lord had done for Israel, and how they repeated rejected Him, i shake my head. Then i think about all that the Lord has done for me, notably becoming human and dying for me, i again must shake my head. I am no different from the ancient Israelites. I expect God to take care of thing MY way. When He does it His way, i am disappointed. Yet, as the Psalms point out today, God is faithful, continually helping and leading an unthankful nation. Why does He do that? Love. More than we can comprehend. He loved us so much, He sacrificed His only son. Today will be a good day!

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Got song?

Got song? Ps 98-103 definitely hit on singing songs of praise to God. The Psalmist takes different attributes of God to put into joyful praise and worship. Just reading through, i cannot help but tap my foot as a modern song comes to mind. So, do songs of praise prepare you to worship, or are they part of the worship? Even the most off-key can make joyful noise, see Ps 98:4. Lucky for me! Keep this in mind each Sunday, the singingand music are not just a warm-up time, it is an important part of the worship! We can offer God praise and worship by singing of His attributes as well as by learning through the scriptures! In Psalms, these are combined. God provides us even tools for that!

A Reminder

What has God done for us? EVERYTHING!!! Today, in Ps 78-83 Asaph concludes his Psalm writing reminding the nation what God has done and IS doing. In the history, Asaph reminds the Israelites of their many failures to follow God, yet God always protects and provides. Similar to us today, after all we could use some reminders of how faithful and loving God is to us. Yet we crave more. "If God would only do this or provide that"...what stipulations do we put on God? It might be good to stop and remember that if God did not do another thing for us, it is already enough, and more that all of us combined could ever repay. Besides, God is not done. He performs miracles in our lives everyday. Just try to breathe without the air He provided!

Thursday, June 14, 2012

What is prosperity?

Why do the wicked prosper? Or do they? Asaph ponders this in today's Psalms (ch 73-77). Check out ch 73, vv16-28. When we start to envy or become jealous of the wicked, this would be a great Ps to adjust our thinking! Esp v 21. How bitter are we when we have envy? Do we not know that the vary things we are envious of will rot, rust and fade away? Is our treasure truly in heaven? We must realize that the wicked do not truly prosper, rather they are slaves to their wickedness. See ch 75 v2. This should remind us that God will deal with the wicked on His timing, not ours. God was gracious enough to save us, will we allow patience so other might also be saved, or do we seek revenge as our "justice"? We are truly blessed, those of us who believe and know Him. We need nothing more.

Oh, my aching back!

Me to Aimme and Donn Riggs: Who is bearing your burdens? Trying to go it alone? How's that working for ya (thanks Tim). God yearns for us to seek Him. David seemed to understand this in the Psalms he wrote. Ps 67-72 cover this, as David reflects time and time again how he is ready to praise God. Listening to contemporary Christian music, it is easy to see where many get their songs and lyrics. Perhaps David is owed some royalties. It is suggested the Ps 68 is the time when David had the ark brought to Jerusalem. Such celebration! Good Ps to focus on to see how God does protect! You can almost sense David's excitement during this time. So back to your burden carrying. David seemed to give his to God. I'll bet that if you keep yours, you will have a sore back, and little relief!

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Focus on God and prayer

Ps 60-66 really show some in depth prayer towards God from David. He doesn't hold back. He knows God can protect and provide. Reading these chapters, you can really sense how David's prayers are being answered. When we pray, do we have our umbrella ready? Are we spending time really meditating on God? That is often tough for me as life gets busy. I seldom pray enough about commitments I am making. When things don't quite turn out, where is the disappointment directed? Is it right to cast blame without allowing the leading? David was probably pretty busy. He had a big family, a nation under constant attack to lead, and much more difficulty in daily life than we have, YET he spent quality time with God. So, what excuse will we use? Gotta go, the phone is ringing...David at least did not have to deal with that!

Running thru the 50's

Running through the 50's. I missed yesterday, so I'm doubling up today. Ps 50-59. These are written by David and show his steadfast reliance on God in times of trouble and persecution, primarily by King Saul. Ps 51 covers his shame of his adultry with Bathseeba and his betrayal of Uriah. See c51v4, David is regretful at sinning against the Lord, not men. His chief concern is in v11, don't take away the Holy Spirit! Ps 53 is a reflection of Ps 14. Since it is repeated, best to heed the words. How important is it to acknowledge and worship God. Ps 54, David is sure of God's success even before it happens! We should have similar faith! Ps55-59 echo that theme. God is steady, faithful and consistent. He has protected in the past, why would He stop now? Rest assured, God has unfailing love!

Grabbin a handle

Today, we cover Ps 42-49. The gist of these is that God will provide and protect. He is in control! The Daily Walk Bible has a note as follows, "Every tomorrow has 2 handles: the handle of anxiety and the handle of faith. Which will you use to get ahandle on your day?". Good thought! Ps 46:10 is one of my favorite verses and one that I use often to help calm me down. keep reading thru 46:11 though, there is good news and hope....God is among us! Ps 44:7 is good to remember when you are under attack. Ps 49:5-9 continue this though and gives encouragement. Remember, it is not only our battle, it is God's. Make sure to grab the right handle!

The Lord is thinking about me right now!

Just when the Psalms were beginning to overwhelm me and all sound similar, along comes today's selections and refreshes me. Ch 36-41 really offer up some key verses to live by. If you are feeling down or dishearted, Ps 37 is a great cure! It is written by David, a guy who knew a few things about being persecuted by enemies. This ch provides me with encouragement that the wicked will not succeed. I must also remember to check my motives as I can become that wicked one! Ps 40 is a great witnessing tool. The group U2 wrote a song called "40" in reference to this...check it out! Note ch 40 v 17. Does it inspire you to know God is with you and concerned for you? With God, what can be victorious over us? As you go about your daily schedule, give pause and reflect on the wonders God has done for us!

Do you really believe that?

Good Wed all....still with me on the Psalms? Tough book to try and read through at once.
Ps 31-35 echo the theme of God caring for his people. God is the rock and fortress, He is worthy of trust, His love is unfailing, and His plans stand firm forever. Just a few thoughts from these chapters. How do we apply it into our everyday life? Can you sense David's passion for God? We worship things like money, housing, cars, and safety the way David worshipped God. Take away one of our security blankets and watch us struggle. David put his faith and passion into God. Due in part to this, we are reading about him 3,000 years later. Do you think your 401k will last that long? God will provide what we who believe need. Do you really believe that?

With Praise and Thanksgiving

Ps ch 25-30 are all about praise and thanksgiving. Keep in mind that these were songs written in Hebrew by David. He is worshipping God, truly showing his love and respect towards God. Ps 27:1 really hits this home. This similar point is noted throughout scripture. With God on my side, we have nothing to fear! How many of us live like that though? We are anxious and worried about the future, security and safety. We build what amounts to little sand walls in front of the oncoming surf. You know what will happen. So turn and put your trust in God. Easy to say, hard to do. Read the Psalms for inspiration on doing this. And know God is in control!

Familiarity in the Psalms

Today, we rejoin the Psalms, specifically 19-24. Quite a bit to consume as there are some great passages to ponder. We start with the question of who is God in ch 19. David is writing and quickly answers that He is controlling everything. We can marvel at His splendor. Ps 22 should sound familiar to us from the Easter narrative. Jesus himself quotes this passage as He is dying on the cross. Give a minute and let that sink in. Of course Ps 23 is a favorite and oft quoted. For good reason. Some of the best writing in the entire Bible! We can see David's struggles and growth throughout the Psalms. We would be wise to struggle and grow in God likewise. Let the Psalms be your guide! The Lord IS our shepherd!

And justice for all....

Today in Psalm 7-12 we read David proclaiming the justice of God. C7v17 sums this up best. But what is justice and who will serve? David attempts to answer this by first declaring and describing that God is just and perfectly fair in c7v11. Ch8 has David delighting in God's creation, showing why He should have dominion over all. In c9 & 10, David acknowledges that the judging and thus justice is God's alone. Ch11 is about God's protection, should be of comfort to those who believe! And ch 12 is a cry for help. In all, God is the answer. So often we bring God in only after we have tried and failed. God is not the reserve qb, rather the one who controls the entire game! We say let justice be done, now we must realize that God is controlling what that justice is!

Take refuge....

So what is God like? The authors of the Psalms attempt to explain. Psalms is more than just a book, or collection of hymns, it is bare bones worship. In times of gladness and joy, and in times of struggle and pain. Psalm 2v11 gives a good glimpse of this worship. Fear is not being frightened, rather it is respectful awe, realizing God's power and might. This month, come along and worship. We can get lost in the Psalms, getting to know our God better. As the Psalmist writes, take refuge in Him.

The end of Job

Job comes to and end, literally actually, he dies in ch 42. But don't let me spoil the ending. In Job 40-42, God throws more questions at Job that he cannot answer. Job answers in ch 42, "I had heard about you before". Teaching others about God is so important, we do not know when it will be of use. Through the trials, Job has come to know God firsthand. He has come to realize that God is in control and we need not try to understand all of God's ways, since we cannot. A question i leave you is God restored Job's fortune, doubling his previous riches and possessions. God only gave Job back 10 kids though and did not double...could that be that people are irreplaceable? Or could it signify eternal life in that Job would one day be reacquainted with his lost kids????

The architect and builder.

Yikes! Job c 38-39, God appears in a whirlwind, and has some questions for Job, none of which he can answer. We would be wise to keep this dialogue in mind when we question God, or events in life that do not seem "fair". Pretty amazing questions when you really look at them. God does not provide detailed answers either, other than the source of all is He. Amazing also that God knows intimate details of His creation. From the extent of the earth to the snorting of a horse. How well do we know our possessions or our families? Better yet, how well do we know ourselves? This dialogue should give us pause to examine and realize not only who God is, but who we are. I am Tom, and did not lay the foundations of the earth. But I worship the one who did. And know that He is in control!

what does God need from us?

Such wisdom from Elihu in Job ch35-37. See c35v7b!! Also, c37v19. What makes us think we have the answers? Are we not guilty of acting like Job's friends when we try to console someone? After all, no one likes their shortcomings pointed out. So why do we act like we have the answer. To Elihu's point, what can we give to God? Nothing! God is without need from us, but He does desire our pursuit.

Wisdom from many sources...

Job 32-34. Wisdom is not just for the aged and experienced. Elihu is younger yet has a strong message for Job. Yet he is also without all of the facts. On the surface, his argument seems correct. Have you ever been so sure of yourself, only to find out additional info? Impetuous creatures we are. In many ways Elihu's response is quite sound in Godly doctrine. Note in c34v12, God will not do wrong. That is a solid rock to base faith on. Do not discount wisdom from all sources.

Time to take stock....

Job 9-31. Continued to take personal inventory, and when we are wrong, promptly admit it and make the appropriate amends. Ok, it doesn't say that, but that is the gist. How often do we take inventory? Of our action, thoughts, desires? Are we honest with it? Was Job? Does God judge while we are here on earth, or is there a day to be determined where all judgement will occur at once? How precious is the blood of Christ. Job has spoken with his three friends and summized that he is clean. So, after 31 chapters, Job and company are no closer to resolution. Perhaps they have worked out much of the though of evil deeds having consequences, but still do not have absolute truth and closure in the matter. For us, some situations might just stay unknown for now. Hope you are ok with that. Now, time to inventory....

The patience of Job!

Is Bildad the master of the obvious? In that matter, are Eliphaz and Zophar? In Job 25-28, Job becomes a bit angry at the useless "advice" he is getting. Just read ch26. Have you ever received obvious advice and reacted like Job? Then you must be breathing. We tend to vigorously defend ourselves when we think we are right. Job hits a key point in c27v6, clear conscience. That is really key to living free. Like the examples of the mines, when we bury issues or burdens, they could be unearthed again. Dealing with them is important. At what point i n this exchange with his friends would we have become violent, or simply walked away? Answers are coming!

the worms are hungry

Anyone want to become "sweet worm food"? If so, stay wicked according to Job in c24v20. So today, we are on Job c22-24. Eliphaz has another go around, reciting cause and effect situations and insisting that Job has some "hidden" sin. Job again responds that God will judge fairly and thoroughly. He holds dear the idea that wicked will truly get what they deserve, and the innocent will be vindicated. Do we view God as an overseer who will mete out justice in the future, perhaps on the day of reckoning? Or do we view God as an active and involved part of our life. Think about that when temptation strikes....God is right there beside you! Our day of reckoning could be today, or any day in the future. Live like it is true, or become sweet worm food....

There is a Day of Judgement?

Do the wicked prosper? In Job 20-21, we see Zophar becoming impatient and again attempting to explain Job's situation without all of the facts. Is Zophar correct in saying that the wicked will not prosper? Job disagrees noting that the wicked do enjoy success. What they all fail to see is the eternal perspective. The wicked might succeed for a period of time, but God will call them to account and those accounts will be settled justly. Everything balances in accounting! We need look at justice eternally, with faith that God will settle fairly. The day is coming, will we be ready to face our shortcomings? Are we without error? Jesus is the way, but we should not use Him like a get out of jail free card! When we think we know something, keep Job c21v34 in mind...
